What is Outcome Based Assessment?

The Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA) is AHPRA's pathway for internationally qualified nurses whose qualifications are relevant but not substantially equivalent to Australian standards. Since March 2020, it is the standard pathway for most IQNMs. It combines supervised practice, the NCLEX-RN, and the OSCE.

11 Weeks 2 Stage Program (NGN + OSCE)

AU$ 4,500
+ AU$500 enrolment

01 - AHPRA Assessment

AHPRA reviews your overseas qualifications and determines whether you need to complete the OBA pathway. We help you understand the outcome and what it means for your timeline.

02 - Supervised Practice Placement

You complete a period of supervised practice in an Australian healthcare setting. We help you find a suitable employer willing to provide OBA supervision and support.

03 - Competency Assessment

Your supervisor assesses your competency against the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice. We coach you throughout.

04 - NCLEX-RN Examination

As part of the OBA, you must pass the NCLEX-RN. Our structured NCLEX preparation program is integrated into your OBA support to ensure you are fully prepared.

05 - OSCE Examination

The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) tests your practical nursing skills. Our face-to-face OSCE training prepares you for every station and scenario.

06 - Full Registration

Once all OBA components are successfully completed, AHPRA grants you full registration as a Registered Nurse in Australia. We celebrate this milestone with you.

Overview

Bringing Your Nursing Career to Australia

Australia has a significant and growing shortage of registered nurses. For internationally qualified nurses, this represents a genuine opportunity to build a rewarding career in one of the world’s best healthcare systems.

Since March 2020, all internationally qualified nurses (IQNMs) whose qualifications are assessed as relevant but not substantially equivalent must complete the Outcome-Based Assessment (OBA) which includes supervised practice, the NCLEX-RN examination, and the OSCE. We support you through every component.

Our team has guided hundreds of internationally qualified nurses through the registration process. We know the common pitfalls, the fastest routes, and how to give your application the best possible chance of success.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about the Australian Nursing Registration Pathways, including OBA, NCLEX (Next Generation NCLEX), OSCE and AHPRA requirements.

What is OBA?

Outcome Based Assessment (OBA) is the new process of assessment model introduced by Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) for Internationally Qualified Nurses and Midwives (IQNM). It is a two‑staged assessment process introduced by NMBA, AHPRA in March 2020. The OBA process includes multiple‑choice question exam (MCQ) also known as Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) or Nursing Council Licensure Examination and an Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE). Before moving to the next stage, Internationally Qualified Nurses and Midwives (IQNMs) should pass these stages first.

This stage is an online learning course that will give information and introduction to Australia (geography, territories, languages, ethnic groups, etc.) and Australian Healthcare context. It includes watching videos, reading and some sort of question‑and‑answer portions. This stage of Outcome Based Assessment (OBA) is free of charge.

Yes, nurses can get permanent residency (PR) in Australia.

The National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX‑NGN) also known as the multiple‑choice question (MCQ) is a newly introduced method of assessment by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) is a computer‑administered examination and consists of items ranging from 75 to 145 questions. The examination results of Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) are utilized by the nursing regulatory bodies (NRBs) as a critical component in the decision‑making regarding registration/licensure of the nursing profession.

Registered Nurse Objective Structured Clinical Examination (RN OSCE) is a test that examines foreign registered nurses. RN OSCE is administered to such nurses desiring to become registered as nurses in Australia. After the candidate successfully passes the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN), they will proceed with OSCE which is a behavioral assessment developed to determine if the IQNM demonstrates the knowledge, skills and competence required.

Next Generation NCLEX (NGN) is multiple choice while OSCE is an actual practical exam. OSCE will simulate a clinical environment and patient scenarios which Registered Nurses are likely to encounter when they assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate care. Nurses are expected to utilize contemporary evidence-based practice and effectively demonstrate the safe practical application of nursing skills.

The examination will take approximately 3-3.5 hours. It may be scheduled for morning or afternoon. OSCE has 10 individual stations, with each station having 10 minutes allocation: 2 minutes for reading and 8 minutes for interaction.
